If the next Steve Nash, Andrew Wiggins or Anthony Bennett is out there in the Campbell River area, an upcoming basketball skills development program beginning this month will be the place for them to get their start.
The Campbell River Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program (CRSNYB) started with an idea that Ian Borenheim had about five years ago to fill the need of having a basketball skills development program/camp outside of school hours in Campbell River.
At the time there was nothing like this being offered here. The nearest offerings were in Courtney and Comox. Borenheim presented the idea to start a program to Andrew Smith, a Level 2 NCCP coach who coaches high school basketball here in Campbell River. Smith loved the idea and was happy to partner up with Borenheim, Basketball BC and Steve Nash Youth Basketball to form the Campbell River Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program (CRSNYB).
The Steve Nash Youth Basketball program is well established in cities and towns across B.C. The program is centered on developing basketball skills at the youth level in a fun and positive environment. Programs/camps usually run eight weeks at one day/week for 45 minutes to one hour per session and is offered to kids from Grades 4-9.
The CRSNYB Program follows the general Steve Nash Youth Skills Development Program guidelines and runs on 100 per cent volunteer power and community support. CRSNYB has also been fortunate enough to have gained the invaluable support from some of the local teachers and school basketball coaches who donate their time and expertise to planning and running the program.
With the amount of community support and by operating as a non-profit organization, CRSNYB is able to keep the program affordable to families and any profit that the organization generates is donated to improve local basketball at the schools. This week the organization is donating $600 to Timberline Secondary School to be put toward new uniforms for the girls basketball team.
This year’s program will run on Tuesdays after school from Feb. 27-May 1 at Southgate School Gym. Cost is $60 and participants receive an official Steve Nash Youth Basketball Jersey. Registration deadline is Feb. 15 and is on a first-come, first-served basis as space is limited. Registration forms have been provided to all the local schools, the registration drop off location is at Southgate School Office.
