The Peewee B Tyees playoff season has been a huge success so far.
Coming off a thrashing of the Cowichan Capitals down in the Valley in their first playoff game, the Tyees took to home ice and continued their domination with a convincing 5-1 victory over Nanaimo.
The final weekend of the North Island playoffs featured a pair of tough matches against traditional foes from Port Alberni and Tri-Port.
The pretenders to the Salmon Capital of the World throne travelled to the real capital on Saturday and our Tyees defended the title ably with a 5-4 victory. The game started out great with the Tyees up 5-1 and seemingly cruising to victory. Port Alberni showed spirit though, and roared back to almost tie the game.
Campbell River then took a perfect playoff record into the final playoff game against Tri-Port. First place in the North Island zone was up for grabs and the Tyees’ run of success was felled as much by illness and injury as their heated rivals from up north. The Tri-Port loss means the Tyees finish second in the north and will travel to play the first place team in the south next weekend.
Coach Andrew McNeilly summed up the past few weeks this way: “I’m really proud of the team for coming together and peaking at the perfect time. The team had been on the wrong side of a lot of close games this year, but in the playoffs they came together as a team and played with incredible focus and determination.”
