Padington wins national age-group championship

Campbell River Killer Whales amass impressive medal haul in top-level competition

Mackenzie Padington of Campbell River won one national championship and added a pair of silver medals as a small delegation from the Campbell River Killer Whales swim club posted a strong showing in the Canadian Age-Group Championships in Quebec City.

Six members of the club competed in the meet and all of them brought home medals.

Padingon, 16, won the 100-metre breast stroke in the 16-18 age group, and added runner-up finishes in both the 200 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. In all, Padington reached the finals in seven events and finished in a fourth-place tie for aggregate scoring in her age group.

Conner Skuse, competing in the male 15-year age group, also won a pair of silvers. He placed second in both the 100 and 200 individual medleys, which combine the butterfly, backstroke, breakstroke and freestyle. Skuse, the only male swimming for the Killer Whales, reached the finals in eight of his nine events and tied for eighth place in aggregate scoring in his age group. His 136 points also placed the Killer Whales 34th in team scoring among 100 male teams.

Four more swimmers — Jamiliya Wellard, Jasmine Skuse, Melayna Beaudin and Cianna Dunn — combined to win bronze in the girls 14-under 4x200 freestyle relay. Jasmine Skuse also snared an individual bronze in the age 13 200 breast stroke.

She and Wellard, competing in the 13-year-old division, and Beaudin and Dunn, in the age 14 group, all reached the finals at least once in their individual events. Added to Padington's total, that gave the Killer Whales a 15th-place showing in the female team standings and the club placed 19th among 128 clubs across the country in the combined team standings.
