Loppet means ‘long haul’

The 31st annual cross country ski race takes place April 13 at Mount Washington Alpine Resort

It’s time for the 31st Annual Vancouver Island Loppet.

Mount Washington and the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club have been busy getting things ready for the popular long distance ski race, which takes place on Mt. Washington on April 13.

However, skiers should note that registration closes on Thursday, April 11 at 11:59 p.m., and say that absolutely no late entries will be accepted.

Loppet means “long haul” in Swedish. The Vancouver Island Loppet is actually five events in one.

There is a full loppet of 30 km, a half loppet of 15 km, a team loppet of 3×10 km, a youth loppet of 5 km, and a cookie loppet for ages six and under of 2 km.

Skiers travel from all over the Island, Western Canada, Europe and New Zealand have participated in past events. The loppet is held on a beautiful course through rolling terrain in and out of Strathcona Park in a festive atmosphere.
