Following a gold medal win at the Vancouver Challenge Cup in May, the Island Elite peewee girls spring hockey team did it again, taking home the gold at the North American Classic in Winnipeg last Sunday.

The 18-member team includes players from Port Alberni, Victoria, Oceanside, Nanaimo, Peninsula and two from Campbell River: Hayley Hunter and Callie Ann Massee.

After losing the first game 3-1 to Saskatchewan, the girls bounced back with convincing victories over Calgary, 8-1, Manitoba, 6-0, and Alberta Extreme, 8-0.

The strong goaltending and defence continued for the Island in the semi-final action with a 6-1 win over Manitoba.

The final game was a re-match of the first game against Saskatchewan.

After three hard-fought periods, the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1.

After two intense overtime periods, Island Elite came out on top with a goal to win its second gold medal in tournament play in a month.
