Hurricane blows through Juan de Fuca

The Campbell River Hurricane female hockey team stunned Juan de Fuca last weekend

It appears the Hurricane that hit the North Island two weeks ago moved south last weekend, picking up speed in the later afternoon.

The Campbell River Hurricane Bantam girls were on the road Sunday to play the Juan de Fuca girls at Westhills arena in Langford.

The home side opened up the scoring in the first period with a quick goal that got the home crowd roaring. The Campbell River girls held Juan de Fuca to the single goal for a full period and a half of play with strong goaltending by Jadylin Spooner and solid defence by Alyssa Palmer, Carrissa Jochimski, Miaya Cramb and Jessica Grant before the flood gates opened.

The Campbell River side bounced back offensively late in the second period with three quick goals from Cassidy Bellavance, Haley Hunter and Kylie Scammell with assists going to Rebecca Manson and Kate Johnson.

This surge by the Campbell River girls quieted the Juan de Fuca fans.

The third period opened with an early goal from the Hurricane’s Lisa Lloyd who made a rush from the defensive zone and beat the goalie with a quick wrist shot.

Rylee Nelson netted the fifth unanswered goal at the nine minute mark of the third.

The Juan de Fuca team was not ready to give up in their home rink and answered with an unassisted goal from Emma Weston but it was the Hurricane’s Bellavance who crushed the comeback with a top shelf goal off a pass from Scammell to seal the game at 6-2 final.

The Hurricanes are off to a 2-0 record and coaches Dennis Bellavance and Guy Germyn were pleased with the girl’s efforts despite a bit of a slow start.

They were especially pleased with the gritty play of Rebecca Mason and Julia Mercer that kept them in the game before the scoring began to open up.
