Some of the nicest Big Rigs from across Vancouver Island made their way to Saratoga Speedway on Saturday as Bailey’s Western Star presented the Big Rig Highway Thunder at Saratoga Speedway.

The second Crash to Pass Boat race of the year was also on the card on Saturday; The first Boat race saw Sheldon Hopp run away with the win, but this time Cam Edwards would come out victorious in the main event, holding off Hopp and the rest of the field to take home his first ever Boat race win. The Hornet cars and the Roadrunners were also on the card on Saturday.

With the rain finally letting up, a full field of 37 Hornet cars, 10 Crash to Pass cars and 6 Roadrunners put on a show for the near sell-out crowd on Saturday.

In the Crash to Pass class, Jeff May upended reigning points leader Hopp in the heat race by more than four seconds, but Hopp overtook May’s early lead and regained the winner’s circle by reversing the result in the 15-lap main event. It was Hopp’s seventh main event win of the season. Edwards finished third in the main.

In the Hornet class, Wendy Ferreira edged Isaac Davis in the B dash and Braydon Weiler won the A dash by just 15-hundredths of a second over Blair Mangles. Heat victories went to Chris Hleck, Trey Woolcock, Mangles and Keith Hunt, who won his first ever race at the track.

Rowland Westra emerged with the 28-car, B main win after jumping into the lead on lap 5 and holding off the charge of Troy Sheridan down the stretch. In the 20-lap A main, Glenn White bided his time behind Weiler for the first 17 laps before moving on the inside to snare the lead and hold off a tightly packed field. Raymond Fortier closed fast in second, with Weiler trailing in third.

The Roadrunners were back in action Saturday, with Dan Kemp claiming the five-car dash, Trace Stevenson winning the heat race and Ryan Guest grabbing the checkered flag in the 15-lap main event for his ninth main win of the season.

Extra laps…The Bomber cars last raced at Saratoga July 18, thanks to a series of three rainouts in a five-week stretch at the track. They will look to make their return this weekend.
