Campbell River Thunder storms to Surrey Mayor’s Cup title

Last weekend, the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association (CRYSA) U13 Boys Rep soccer team, Campbell River Thunder, traveled to Surrey to participate in the Surrey Mayor’s Cup.

The Campbell River U13 boys rep team won their division in the Surrey Mayor’s Cup March 17-18.

Last weekend, the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association (CRYSA) U13 Boys Rep soccer team, Campbell River Thunder, traveled to Surrey to participate in the Surrey Mayor’s Cup.

They kicked off the tournament with a 5-1 defeat over the host team, Central City Breaker (Surrey) on Saturday. It would be the only goal against Campbell River Thunder in the tournament.

Game 2 was a tough battle against Port Coquitlam. It was a fast and furious game for both teams that was decided when Campbell River midfielder, Nick Wunsch, scored the game’s only goal in the last two minutes, allowing Campbell River supporters to breathe a sigh of relief. Coaches Joe Cizmic, Jordie Sorensen and Gerry Smit declared it the best game of their season.

On Sunday, game three was played against North Vancouver FC with a win of 5-0, which raised the team’s hopes for a medal. In the final game of the tournament, the Campbell River Thunder played Vancouver United Soccer Club, defeating them 2-0. With four wins during the tournament, Campbell River Thunder was tied with North Delta FC in points, but secured first place in their division based on goal differential.

Tournament goals were scored by Nick Wunsch (4), Markus Johnson (3), Fredrick Prinsloo (2), Dawson Gage (2), Aiden Fraser (1), and Isaiah Craigie (1).

Game MVPs were Markus Johnson, Finn Miyagi, Aiden Fraser, and Ava Sinclair. The team’s overall tournament MVP was awarded to forward Fredrick Prinsloo.

Fabulous games were also played by defenders Ivo Cizmic, Quinton Hoeflich, and Zander Hadikin, midfielder Kaeden Platt, as well as guest players Brodie Warner and Hannah Loeb. The weekend travel opportunity to attend this 350-plus team tournament was the highlight of the season for the team.
