The Campbell River Comets Track and Field Club is preparing for the upcoming Island Solstice meet at the Vanier track this weekend, June 24-25.

The Solstice meet is co-hosted by the Campbell River and Comox Valley track clubs. There is usually a very good turnout of Comets due to the local venue. Many athletes have already competed in two track meets already this season, in Nanaimo and Duncan, with great results. For some of the younger participants, these were their first experiences at official track and field meets and it offered them the chance to set their own Personal Bests which they will attempt to chase down all season long. Many Comets also placed top 10 in their events, with ribbons for 1st to 8th place. For complete results, visit their website at www.campbellrivercomets.ca.

Amid serious training, the Campbell River Comets also held their annual Lap-a-thon on June 13. This is the Comets only fundraiser of the year. The athletes collect pledges and then try to run as many laps as they can in the given time (usually an hour or less). This year the participants were split into eight teams. The total laps run by these teams during the 45 minutes was 232. In addition, Gavin Chatterton, decided he would run the entire time as an individual. He managed to finish 20 laps in 47 minutes. To date, the club has raised $869.00 from this event, which will be put towards the purchase of new equipment.
