Join the streets and take a stand for health and well-being during Bike-to-Work/School-Week, May 30 - June 5.

Although among the most affluent in the world, North Americans are amongst the most unhealthy and sickest – and yet no one seems to be asking “Why?” Explore these reasons for yourself but more importantly take affirmative action to combat it today!

Do you have a bike sitting lonely in your shed or garage just waiting for attention? “I don’t have time,” You say? Or perhaps you have an arrangement of other excuses? Hass your good health really become so unimportant for you?

An article by the Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org) points out seven great reasons why exercise is good for you. With Bike-to-Work-Week approaching, perhaps this is just the motivation you need to join the streets and take a stand for health and well-being.

A look at the gains:

1: Exercise controls weight.

Start by taking your bike out of storage and giving it a clean and some TLC. Once it is ready, start by a short spin around the block.

2: Exercise combats health conditions and diseases

Being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Bike and blood flowing…

3: Exercise improves mood.

Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Check out the multitude of mountain biking trails in and near Campbell River. So beautiful!

4: Exercise boosts energy.

Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.

5: Exercise promotes better sleep.

Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to fall asleep.

6: Exercise puts the spark back into your sex life.

Regular physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don’t exercise.

7: Exercise can be fun

Exercise and physical activity gives you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Physical activity can also help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting.

So here is your opportunity to form a team, join a team or just dust off that bike and hit the streets. Set an example to others, especially our children. Be a demonstration of health and well being.
