Atom Tyees earn split

Hockey team loses to Powell River but bounces back with a big win over Port Alberni.

The Rehn Atom A Tyees begin tiering play this Saturday at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

These pre-season hockey games determine what tier the Tyees play in this season. They take on Victoria Racquet Club at 11 a.m.

Last Saturday, the local boys travelled to Powell River Kings and lost a hard-fought 5-3 decision.

The game began with a flurry of chances as the Tyees’ first line of Alex Movold, Ethan Vaton and Brian Majic got off to an explosive start.

After falling behind 1-0, Movold made a beautiful pass from behind the Kings net to set up Majic who tied the game.

A nice goal by Brice Idiens put the Tyees ahead at 12:42 of the second, and then Jacob Obuck fired a beauty on a breakaway to put the Tyees up 3-1.  The Kings pushed back hard and with 13 seconds left in the second, the game was tied 3-3.

The third period belonged to Powell River. Nolan Wyatt had a glorious breakaway chance late in the third, but was denied by the Kings netminder.

On Sunday, the Tyees hosted the Port Alberni Bulldogs and skated to an easy 13-5 win.

Idiens and Obuck had very strong games with five goals each while Brian Majic, Evan Billard, and Jacob Thomas added singles.
