Arriba! Mexican theme at Ralph Boyd Men’s Open

The Campbell River Curling Club hosted the 53rd annual Ralph Boyd Men’s Open on Feb 3-5, with 24 Teams, competing in the Mexican themed weekend.

All 96 players had a chance for a ‘draw to the button’ to advance to a skills competition with $1,000 up for grabs. The top three winners were Richard Tanguay, Trevor McClung & Lyle Boyce.

The Ralph Boyd Memorial Trophy, handed out by Graeme Boyd and Karl Bro to the most sportsmanlike Team, was given to the John LaPointe Rink. The Team of John LaPointe, Glen Vlaj, Doug LaPointe, Gary Cosgrove & Shawn Johnson were award not only the trophy but a team fishing trip with Sea J Charters.

The A Event sponsored by Inland Kenworth was won by the Ron Schmidt rink of Comox Valley, the team consisting of Ron, Norm Cote, Jeff Pilon & Darren Richards. In the final they went up against local rink Bob Tonkin.

The B Event sponsored by Hub Barton Insurance was won by the Todd Peachey rink of Campbell River, Todd’s team of Joe Oster, Doug Evans & Mark Degagne enjoyed a battle with fellow local rink Ed Schmuland.

The C Event sponsored by No 1 Autobody was won by John LaPointe of Campbell River who captured victory over longtime supporter Steve Whynott of Comox Valley. John’s team consisted of Glen Vlaj, Doug LaPointe, Gary Cosgrove &

Shawn Johnson.

The D Event sponsored by Bill Howich Chrysler was won by Ray Michell of Comox Valley, Ray put together a team of Myles Craig, Cody Hall and Jade Jensen. This win was over the Neff rink of Nanaimo.

During the event’s activities all players enjoyed a wonderful night of fish tacos donated by Marine Harvest and cooked up by one of their own, Joe Johnson.

Susan Johnson manager of The Campbell River Curling Club says this was a wonderful weekend filled with good curling, she would like to thank the Eagles Ladies Auxilary for our Saturday Night Banquet! Johnson says the Campbell River Curling Club is the place where friends come together along with staff,  volunteers, sponsors and supporters to make it one of their  season’s best weekends.
