Willow Point Park was taken over by nearly 150 young rugby players and their families on Sunday as the Campbell River Athletics hosted the Vancouver Island Rugby Union’s first Jamboree of the season.
The Athletics had two U8 teams, a U10 team, some new recruits in the U12 Division, and great representation on the North Island U14 Girls team that battled to a 40-40 draw against their South Island counterparts.
“It was an incredible day for our growing club,” says President and U14 Girls coach Erin Young. “Our kids and coaches represented our town and our sport very well and we can’t wait to get back to work at practice to apply what we learned in these game situations against the rest of the Island.”
The U14 Boys travelled down to Cowichan Rugby Football Club and helped newly formed James Bay Athletic Association U14 Boys to a win against the home side.
The local athletes train one weeknight a week then alternate Sundays between training and Jamboree-style competition.
They will wind down as winter weather comes in mid- November but will restart the second half in March. They are still looking for new players in all age divisions, especially U10, U12, and U14 Boys and Girls.
