OUR VIEW: Inaccessible council chambers not acceptable

There are some projects that warrant appropriate attention and this is one

In this day and age of accessibility of awareness, it is surprising to hear that Campbell River’s city council chambers are so inaccessible.

Coun. Larry Samson has put the city on notice of his desire to see the chamber’s accessibility improved. Good for him. There’s no excuse for a modern civic building to be such an obstacle to people with physical disabilities in our community.

Now, of course, such upgrades are going to cost money and council will have to find that money during upcoming budget deliberations. City spending is a big issue in this community and any capital expenditures are going to be scrutinized and criticized. However, there are some projects that warrant appropriate attention and this is one. How it will be done will be left up to our city staff and councillors but a reasonable plan is necessary.
