Let’s consider a new way to celebrate Canada Day: Letter

I’m a huge fan of the Campbell River Canada day festivities. Every year I’m impressed by the amount of work that goes into it and the community spirit it evokes.

I was, however, disconcerted when I read that Campbell River will host the largest Canada Day fireworks display in B.C. this year. I think it is time to rethink the fireworks display and look at other, more ethical ways to enjoy the evening: ways that would not affect human health, wildlife and the environment.

Firstly, the fire risk is real with wildfires already blazing in our province in early May. In addition, the noises from fireworks cause fear in animals and disorient them – birds flying into windows and abandoning their nests; deer and other wildlife running into roadways. Pets too experience stress and anxiety from the noise levels.

People are also affected. The loud bangs can be panic-inducing in those dealing with past trauma. And then there are the environmental impacts.

Fireworks contain chemicals and debris that come back down to contaminate our soil and water. The fumes created are toxic to people and animals.

With all the evidence we have now about the detrimental effects of fireworks, I think it is time for Campbell River to follow the example of some other Canadian cities and consider starting a new tradition or a new way to celebrate Canada Day without fireworks.
