William Louis O'Connor

June 26, 1934-April 27, 2012

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that William (Bill) Louis O'Connor, born June 26, 1934, passed away at the Campbell River Hospital surrounded by his loved ones on April 27, 2012. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his family: wife Freda O'Connor of 55 years; brother Bob O'Connor (Carol) and two sisters; son Bill Jr. O'Connor (Tracey Lancashire); daughter Laurel O'Connor; three grandchildren, Devon Behan (Kirsten Curtis), Crystal-Ann Ross (Evan), and Daniel Turpin (Hailey Lagos and daughter Jayla); and one great grandchild, Connor Behan; as well as many extended family members and friends.

Born in Manitoba, Bill headed west to Willow Point, BC with Freda in 1955. With trucking in his blood, he pioneered the first highway self-loading logging truck on Vancouver Island in 1964. Drawn to Quadra Island years later, he bought a sawmill and, while still hauling logs, built the Quathiaski Cove shopping center that still stands today. His love of hard work and contributions to his community continued through out the years and he was often seen sauntering down to the coffee shop, store or local pub with his beloved dog 'Nook by his side to tell a tale or two. A real character, Bill will not soon be forgotten.

The family would like to thank Dr. James Grace and the entire 3rd floor of the Campbell River Hospital for their guidance and support, as well as the Quadra Island Ambulance and Fire Crew for being there. It is much appreciated.

A 'Celebration of Life' will be held outside Saturday, May 12th at 1pm on the corner of Harper and Plaza Road, in front of the warehouse, on Quadra Island, BC.
