DIEDERICHS

WERNER WALTER

1919- 2008

Walter (known to some of his friends as Wally or Weiner) passed away, after a brief illness, on July 23,2008.

He is predeceased by Erna, his wife of 53 years and is sadly missed by his loving children: son Ron (Sue) Diederichs of Courtenay, daughters Monica (John) Dorner of Fort St. John, Barb Diederichs and Jackie Sonney (Ray Faucher) of Campbell River. Opa will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren, who were a source of much pride and joy: Carl, Matt and Claire Diederichs; Hailey, Crystal and Jeremy Dorner and Sandy and Rikki Thompson.

Dad was born in Brandenberg an der Havel, Germany on December 11, 1919 and was an enthusiastic mountaineer and kayaker in his younger years. He maintained a lifelong love of the outdoors. As a POW in Canada during the war, he gained an appreciation for the beautiful land and attractive opportunity available in Canada. Werner met Erna when he returned to Germany after WW II. He returned to Canada and established a base in Ocean Falls, BC and then brought her over to be married in Vancouver. They left immediately to create a home and begin a family in Ocean Falls. From there they moved to Campbell River in 1960, where they settled and where he worked for many years at Elk Falls.

Dad was well known for his quiet skill at many things, his cheerful disposition and a unique but always evident sense of humor, though he was by nature a shy man who avoided big crowds. He was very interested in photography and painted beautiful watercolours throughout his life, which are cherished by the friends and family who received them.

Cremation as requested. The family will be hosting an open house at the Carriage Room of the Royal Coachman Neighborhood Pub from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on July 31st, 2008.
