August 14, 1953 - September 21, 2024
In loving memory ~
With deep sadness we said farewell to Wayne Carl Steinhauer on Sept 21, 2024, after a short illness due to brain cancer.
Wayne was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley, attending Cowichan Senior Secondary School, graduating with honors in English and then moved to Campbell River in 1987.
Wayne worked in the forest industry from 1972 to1987 then thought he would try his hand at fish guiding. Bobby O, Walter and Steve apprenticed him on his way to becoming an expert fish guide. Through his fish guiding, clients and celebrities from all over the world got to experience Wayne's unique wit, charm and skill in both the 17 foot Whaler and rowing in the Tyee pool. Keeping with the Tyee theme, Wayne joined the team at Tyee Chevrolet where he worked for the past 13 years. He loved working there and the banter with all the crew.
Wayne enjoyed athletics and the outdoors his entire life, excelling in soccer, hockey, fastball, tennis, racquetball, squash, and curling.
Wayne was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #137 and enjoyed his friendships there.
Coming from a family of 7 children, he is survived by brother Larry, sister Sherry (Ron) Richter and sister Susan (Andy) Entner and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as a host of lifelong friends. He is predeceased by his father Willie and mother Leone, and stepmother Ethel, brothers Melvin and Howard, and sister Gloria.
A memorial for Wayne will be held next spring or early summer.
We would like to thank all the staff at the North Island Hospital Campbell River for their compassion, hard work, and support during his stay.
Any donations in his memory can be made to Dying With Dignity Canada or BC Cancer Foundation.
