Ronald was born in Port Angeles, Washington to Nora and Leon Proteau. He came to Canada with his parents in 1943 along with his brother Philip and his sister Dolores. They lived in Sointula until 1944, after which they moved to nearby Port McNeill. In 1946 they moved to Campbell River.
Ronald joined the RCAF in 1953 as an aircraft electrician until his discharge in 1957, when he again returned to Campbell River, working at the Elk Falls Mill (Crown Zellerbach) as an industrial electrician. Ronald married Donna in 1966, and had their son Dale in 1967. He retired in 1991 from Elk Falls and enjoyed 25 years of visiting with family, lunches with his son Dale and watching his television.
