In Loving Memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving father and husband, Rolf Aunet. Rolf was born on July 13, 1948 in Rorvik, Norway, and passed away in Campbell River, B.C., on May 24, 2022, at Yucalta Lodge after living 10 years with dementia.
Rolf arrived in Canada on his own at the age of 17, to live and work on his uncle's farm in Saskatchewan. With his limited knowledge of English, he learned quickly by playing cards with his elderly neighbours. In time, he continued west to Calgary and began work as a gas pipeline surveyor, earning his credentials as an engineering technologist, eventually advancing to project management in pipeline engineering.
It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Joan, on a charter flight to Scandinavia. Rolf & Joan were married in Seattle in 1981, and soon welcomed four sons. The growing family moved from Calgary to Campbell River in 1986, as one of a close-knit group of Norwegian families pioneering fish farming in the region.
After an adventurous time in aquaculture during those early years, Rolf started his own window covering & blinds business. He enjoyed the outdoors, cross country skiing, and hiking the local trails.
He relished being surrounded by the people he loved during trips back to Norway, countless days in Seattle with his in-laws, or hosting friends from near and far.
For several years he coached his sons in youth soccer. His boys were his greatest joy, and Rolf devoted his life to them. His patience, kindness and unconditional love will always be felt and passed on in his memory. It is the greatest gift any of us could have received.
Rolf is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan, sons Bjorn (Elina), Hans (Lisa), Tor and Olav, grandsons, Leif and Mattias, and family in Norway & Seattle.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers at Yucalta Lodge for their compassionate care for Rolf over the last 5 years.
A service will be held on Friday, June 24, at 1pm at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
