Richard Edward (Dick) Hartford

September 18, 2002

hartford,

Richard Edwaard(Dick)

Died peacefully in his sleep September 18, 2002. Predeceased by wife Pat in 1983 and all of several brothers and sisters.

Survived by son Peter (Phyllis) of Crystal Mountain, Wash., grandsons Tyler(Anne) and Ryan (Chris) and great granddaughters Sorrel, Alayah, and Maddie of Bellingham, Wash., and son Alex(Ellen) of Heriot Bay, B.C., granddaughter Alison and grandson Wesley of Vancouver, B.C., and niece Angela Hildrun of Lake Havasu city, Arizona.

Dick was born in Kearney, Nebraska on Hallowe’en in 1917. He studied journalism and played football at college in Kearney and then moved west to California in the 30’s, where he worked as a cook, longshoreman, and journalist. He married Patricia Anne sullivan, also from Nebraska, in 1939. They settled in Sausalito, where Dick worked as a piledriver until WWII, when he joined the Merchant Marine, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific. On his return from the war he ran a printing business in san Francisco and a bar in the alta Mira Hotel in Sausalito. In the late 50’s the family moved to Big Sur, where Dick owned and operated the village Store. The store was the center of that community in the 50’s and 60’s, and dick was a large and powerful presence in both the store and the community. In the 70’s he moved north to run a restaurant in Benbow, California and then, after Pat’s death, retired to Quadra Island, B.C. in 1987.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Burns, Maru Jolar, and all the Home Care workers, especially Karyn Ruel, Gail Johnson, and Joanne cameron for their excellent care of dick.

No service at Dick’s request. In his memory please enjoy a good meal, have a glass of scotch, and befriend a stray dog or cat.
