October 16, 1949 - April 23, 2025
In loving memory ~
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Michael on April 23, 2025. Michael was born in Ottawa on October 16th, 1949 to Audrey and Paul and grew up in Edmonton and Lethbridge with his younger siblings, Judy and Kevin.
After graduating from high school, Michael attained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Lethbridge. While attending, Michael played goalie for the university's hockey team. Furthering his education, Michael then enrolled at the University of Alberta where he completed his Masters of Science in Entomology. During this period, Michael married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Diane on Feb. 28, 1970. Diane was truly the love of and the most paramount person in Michael's life.
In 1974, Michael and family moved to Duncan BC and while on the Island, Michael completed his Teacher's Certificate at the University Of Victoria in the spring of 1978. Later that year, a full-time teaching position opened up in Dawson Creek BC, and thus Michael and family spent the next 12 years in the Peace Country. Michael was a passionate and devoted biology and chemistry teacher. He was also involved in high school football, even coaching his twin boys in the sport.
In 1990, the Jones family was presented with an opportunity to move back to the Island, this time residing in Campbell River. After several stints at other local schools, Michael secured a full-time position at Timberline Secondary School's Science Department in 1997 where he stayed until his retirement in 2008.
Once retired, Michael and Diane embarked on their love of adventure and travel. They spent most of their winters in their fifth-wheel either in California or Arizona where they enjoyed the company of many friends. Alaska, Croatia, Africa, China, and Vietnam were just some of the many trips the couple embarked on. Michael was passionate about photography, gardening, geocaching and especially playing pickleball. An activity both him and Diane enjoyed.
Michael is survived by his partner and wife of 55 years Diane, his three sons, Paul (Lisett), Nathan and Adam, and two dearly loved grandchildren, Gabrielle and Nolan. He is also survived by his siblings Judy and Kevin.
The family would like to thank the ICU staff for their attentive care of Michael. If you wish to make a donation in his memory, one could do so to either the Heart and Stroke foundation or the BC Cancer Society. In honouring Michael's wishes, there will be no celebration of life, with the family holding an intimate gathering at a later date.
Michael will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
