January 26, 1937 - October 4, 2020
Mike died peacefully at home on October 4 2020, at 83 years of age. He was predeceased by his first-loved wife, Eleanor, mother of his four children, and by sisters Betty and Nell. Survived by his second-loved wife, Cathy, brother Martin (Vija), sister Susan (Jim) and by his children Steven (Patricia), Heather (Gerald), Michelle (Morgan), and Dan (Becky), by grandchildren, Kimberley, Matthew (Kate), Jake and Jayden and great-grandchildren, Mason, Theo and Piper.
Mike was born and grew up in Vancouver, getting a love of the ocean from his father. He moved, with his family, to Vancouver Island in 1964 to work at Crofton Pulp and Paper Mill, where he stayed until he retired in 1996. He always kept the family well supplied with fresh fish and organic vegetables and fruit, which he tended carefully.
With Eleanor and the children, he spent many happy times camping in the Okanagan and taking the boat to camp at Tent Island.
Mike and Cathy married in 1993 and moved to Campbell River in 2007. Here, he honed his skills at woodworking, making fine furniture, intricate segmented wood turnings, and caricature carvings that make everyone smile. He loved to travel, whether by RV, boat or train, and, with Cathy, they had many wonderful journeys in North America and Europe.
His ashes to be dispersed at sea on October 25.
Many thanks to Dr. Sutherland, Dr. Morrison and all the Palliative Care Team.
