Matthew “Matt” Wocks of Campbell River.

April 26, 1985-June 5, 2014

In the early morning of June 5, 2014, Matthew passed away peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, comforted by family and close friends. He was 29.

Matt was born in Campbell River B.C., April 26, 1985, to Robin and Leslie (Les) Wocks. In 1987, the family relocated to Port Hardy where, they remained until 1993. During that time, Matthew and his parents welcomed two more brothers to the family; Nolan (1987) and Chad (1992). Shared hobbies, adventures, homes and traits, the three brothers held an incredible bond, overflowing with laughter and loyalty.

The Wocks Family settled into the small community and Matt made many friends; none as close as Shawn Milligan; a bond that formed at the tender age of two and remained until his passing day.

In 1993, the Wocks family returned to Campbell River to be closer to family, and at the age of 8, Matthew met his second “best bud” Jordan Kinakin; they also held a life long bond. Not family by blood but certainly by heart, was Katie Denne (nee Wilson) and the Wilson Family. Katie and Matt shared a very special bond.

Matt always enjoyed an adventure and that often came with the outdoors; mountain biking, camping, beach days, fishing and paint ball. He also enjoyed video games and bad zombie movies; the family home was often filled with friends for marathon nights. At the age of 15, Matt found his passion for Martial Arts. It is through this practice that Matt found the mental and physical strength to carry him through some dark days.

After graduating From Timberline High School in 2003, Matt remained in Campbell River for a short while before spreading his wings and moving to Fort McMurray, lured by his friend Shawn. Once there, Matt encouraged Jordan and eventually his dad and brothers to join him for work and companionship.

Matt had many happy times in Fort McMurray. He made very good friends and did his best to stay close to them in spite of his illness preventing him from remaining there.

Matt was a multifaceted young man. He was charming and quick witted; often keeping those around him in stitches or on their toes as he was also a practical joker. He was a straight shooter. If asked his opinion, he’d give it whether you liked it or not. One of Matt’s favourite quotes, “Do not pray for an easy life. Pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.” Bruce Lee.

Matt is predeceased by his grandfather Donald Wocks and his great-grandparents, Reginald and Dorothy Davies and Opal Darby.

Grieving Matthew’s loss are his parents Les and Robin Wocks, brothers Nolan and Chad Wocks, grandparents Marlene Wocks, Barry and Carolyn Davies. Aunt and Uncle Tamara Wocks (Treg) and Ron Davies. Godparents Uncle Stacy and Mimi Wilson. Family of the heart Shawn, Jordan and Kate. Plus so many friends; most notably Hans (Saundrine), Brad (Mandy), Kelvin, Adam, Dana and Whitney among others.

A celebration of Matt’s life will be held June 21, 2014 at 2:00pm and will be hosted by the Kunz family in their home at 3801 Island Highway, Campbell River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Campbell River Hospice Society.
