November 5, 1977 - August 31, 2020
It is with the deepest sorrow that the family of Matthew Richard Smith announce his passing at his home on August 31st, 2020. An autopsy has determined the cause of death to be a fatal heart arrhythmia... his heart of hearts simply stopped beating.
Matthew was born in Kitimat on November 5th, 1977. He was a kind, generous and gentle soul who loved his family unconditionally. The love that he had for his nephews and nieces was boundless. Matt enjoyed participating in sports with his friends, practicing Taekwondo, hanging out with his buddies and teaching himself to play the guitar. He later moved to Victoria and graduated from Camosun College as a Horticulture Technician. He stayed on Vancouver Island and worked in his chosen field in various capacities until his passing in Campbell River.
Matt is survived by his parents Merina Smith of Kitimat and Rick Smith of Campbell River, maternal grandmother Sandra Patriquin of Embrun, ON, his sister Nikky Peers of Salt Spring Island, his brother Jason Smith (Jessica Hannem) of Courtenay, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Matthew was predeceased by his maternal grandfather Malcolm Peers of Pugwash, NS, his paternal grandparents Leonard and Joan (Cameron) Smith of Springhill, NS, and his brother Michael of Amherst, NS.
When it is once again safe to travel, a memorial service will take place here on Vancouver Island. A memorial service will also be held in Springhill, NS, where Matt's ashes will be placed next to his brother Michael.
Cremation has occurred under the care and guidance of Island Funeral Services. We thank them very much for their highly professional and compassionate service.
If you are moved to honour our son Matthew's life, a donation to either The Canadian Mental Health Association or the charity of your choice in his name would be greatly appreciated.
