June 4, 1939 - September 13, 2016

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Mate has lost his battle with cancer after a long and courageous fight.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Katica; his son Davor and daughter-in-law Brenda and their children Ashley(James), Chaley (Dean) and Nicholas (Billie). His daughters: Visnja and son-in-law Mark and their children, Matthew, Christopher, Katie and Lukas; and Mary and son-in-law Bill and their children, Liam, Ryan and Emma. As well he leaves behind 3 great grandchildren, Durnin, Keen and Leni with Baby Drazenovic on the way. Also mourning his loss are his sister, Anka and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and Croatia.

Mate lived life to the fullest. He loved to work and play hard. He immigrated to Prince George in 1971 and became a logger until his forced retirement 30 years later due to a back injury. He then changed his focus to his many wood projects. He and Katica moved to Campbell River in 2005 and he made it his mission to meet as many people as possible on his long walks. Papa loved his family more than anything else and was so proud of all their accomplishments. He loved to cheer on his grandkids. The stands will be one amazing spectator short this season.

Many thanks to Dr. Lebeuf for his compassionate care right to the very end. Dad said you were the best! Thanks also to Dr. Prinsloo and to all the nurses especially Tammy, Fay and Rebecca at the Cancer Clinic.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

Volimo te puno!

Prayers will be at 7:00 pm on Friday and funeral mass at 12:45 on Saturday September 17, 2016 at St. Patrick's Parish. Interment and reception to follow.
