Mary (May) Gorton

February 27, 1918 ~

September 25, 2003

May, formerly of Burnaby and more recently of Campbell River passed away peacefully at the Campbell River Hospital. She has her wish and is with Tom, her husband of 59 years. Her sister Helen Sutherland and brother John Bell also predeceased her. She is survived by her son Tom, daughter in law Jeannette (Campbell River); granddaughters Nicole and Trisha (both of Victoria) and Stephanie (Calgary); twin sister Irene Brown (Mission); sister Lorraine Nordin (Surrey) and many nieces and nephews.

May was born in Ladysmith, grew up in Vancouver and lived many years in South Burnaby before moving to Campbell River in 1997. She worked for several years in retail jewelry and retired after 19 years with the BC Forest Service in 1971.

May’s pleasures included gardening and entertaining. Her friends, neighbours and family will remember her summer barbecues and her famous Boxing Day parties. She was very close to her sisters and brother; they never missed an opportunity to celebrate family occasions together. Her greatest joy was her granddaughters. She developed a special relationship with each of them building memories that will never be forgotten.

The family would like to thank the many Campbell River nurses and caregivers who supported May during this last year.

There will be a family celebration of May’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in May’s memory to a charity of choice.
