September 2, 1938 - September 2, 2023

In Loving Memory ~

Mary Kathleen Schmitke, loved by her adoring family and friends, ascended into heaven on her 85th birthday. She passed away with peace and grace in Campbell River, B.C., enveloped in the warm embrace of loved ones.

Mary was born September 2nd, 1938, in Birch River, MB. She grew up under the endless prairie skies, which she so loved. In 1958, Mary and John's fate intertwined. Exchanging the special look a boy and girl give each other when they fall head over heels in an instant. Their gaze tells the truth of a forthcoming lifetime of endless love and unwavering devotion.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband, John, who was her steadfast companion for 63 years. She leaves behind a legacy of love and family. Their family started with three boys Pat, Tom, and Ron, in Calgary and then they returned to Manitoba where their daughter Shauna was born.

Settling in Portage La Prairie, Mom was a bookkeeper for the city for many years. Mom and Dad loved road trips and spent summers camping with their children and grandchildren. This continued to bring them enjoyment after retirement to Vernon in 2000. They moved further west to Campbell River, British Columbia, in 2009.

All her children married and blessed her with her greatest joys. Ten adoring grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Great "Gma" will watch over the 8th as she makes her grand entrance soon. Each precious, forever embodied by her tender love.

Mary was very close to her siblings. Phoebie, Fred, Garnet, and Pearl will greatly miss the long conversations shared with their loving sister. Mary is now once again with her parents Helen Greta and Elmo Arthur Burton, and siblings Stella, Clarence, George, and Charlie.

Mary was a guiding light for her family, friends, and the communities she touched. Mary was steadfast in her faith, and she lived devoted to the Lord's word. Mary dedicated her time and talents to her community, acting as treasurer for the Lutheran churches in Portage La Prairie and Vernon. Her selflessness knew no bounds, and her devotion will be remembered fondly.

Mary had her quirks and charms that endeared her to all.

She was wise, curious, and determined, and never missed a Saturday lottery ticket. Her delicious golden pancakes, and a smile that could light up a room.

Among the many significant milestones in her life, none shone brighter than the treasured generations that follow, her 50th anniversary, and joyful family reunions.

Mary will forever be remembered for her grace, love, and enduring legacy. She touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Mary left sprinkles of love everywhere. May she rest in eternal peace.

Mary's family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Davis, Dr. Morrison, and Jeanna. Also, for the compassionate nurses on 3B, especially MiMi and Nicola, as well as Pastor Alex for their unwavering support during her final moments.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests generous donations be made to Covenant House at 1280 Seymour Street, Vancouver, V6B 4K8.
