A resident of Yucalta Lodge in Campbell River, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 7th, 2003, at age 78. Predeceased by her husband Nick Strobbe and brothers Bill LaHue and Johnny LaHue, she is survived and will be dearly missed by son Ole Svennes of Kelowna; daughters Marne (Brian) Hicks and Judy Strobbe, both of Campbell River; grandchildren Jody (Lisa); David, Kyla (Jeff) and Meghan (Mike); great-grandchildren Tristyn and Russell; brothers Charles (Doris) LaHue of Maple Ridge and Roger (Bertha) LaHue of Kelowna; sisters Mildred (Stewart - deceased) Hill of Westbank, Dorothy (Phil) Gaudreault of Campbell River, Mary (Ivan - deceased) Taylor of Cranbrook; and Marg (Dave) Setso of Campbell River; sisters-in-law Marie and Roberta LaHue, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


Mabelle served with Canadian Womens’ Army Corps during the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in both Nakusp and Branch 137, Campbell River. She acted as a volunteer for Birthright for many years as well as the Alano Club and was an active member of the local Heart and Stroke Club. In Mabelle’s lifetime, she enjoyed flower gardening, wrote poetry and songs, played harmonica and guitar and loved to sing, a skill she taught to both her daughters. She was well-known for her home baked buns, cinnamon buns and spaghetti. In her leisure she loved the freedom of driving her car. Mabelle will always be remembered for the love of her family. Her children were her life, and were told they were never alone, as she always reminded them, "you always have an angel on your shoulder."


Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 15, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, with Father Bill MacDonald, celebrant. Prayers will be held at the church on Thursday at 8:00 pm with viewing to follow. Special thanks to all the staff at Yucalta Lodge for their loving care of Mabelle over the past 5½ years. Interment will follow at a later date at Elk Falls Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to ISLAND FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 103-909 ISLAND HIGHWAY, CAMPBELL RIVER.
