February 2, 1919 - September 6, 2021
Lorna passed away peacefully in the early morning of September 06, 2021.
She had seen Terry and Carol on Tuesday, Terry on Friday, friend Marg on Saturday and was doing pretty well but getting more and more tired. Her passing was not unexpected but still a surprise.
Lorna was born at home on Feb 2, 1919 to Arden and Sadie Carlson near the small town of Trossachs Sk. The eldest of 3 her early years were spent on several homesteads in southern Saskatchewan. Times were tough and the family grew up without the amenities that we take for granted such as hydro, indoor plumbing, running water, phones or internet.
Lorna and her family moved to Weyburn in the 1930's where she finished school and began a career as a hair stylist. She was swept off her feet when she met and married Russell Pennock in 1940. Russ served in the second world war and Lorna worked in a munitions factory in Ontario. After the war they returned to Regina, Sk and later moved back to Weyburn, Sk.
She was a great supporter of her husband Russ when he became a friend of Bill W.
She was a very artistic lady and worked in many mediums including painting, pen & ink drawings, oil painting and pottery, as well she was an excellent seamstress, knitter and needle work.
Along with a small group she created "The Big Wheel" which depicted the many aspects of prairie life and hangs in Weyburn's library to this day.
Lorna and Russ were very active in the community with many friends but, they always had time for family, hosting many dinners and celebrations. They loved looking after their grandchildren and devoted much time to them.
They moved to Campbell River, BC in 1970 and loved the "Island Life Style". Lorna was in her element with painting and pottery.
In her 70th year, after the sudden passing of her beloved husband Russ, she took up acting and joined River City Players. She started helping behind the scenes, but soon became an actor. She performed in various roles over the next few years. Assisting other actors, she spent many hours line coaching. They will recall her insistence of excellence and encouragement with saying "Lets go over that one more time!";
Lorna accepted a challenge when she was approached to work with Ted Price's Theatre Co and other professional actors in Prince George. There, she performed in the "Miracle Worker" , the story of Helen Keller. Over the years, in Prince George and Campbell River she appeared in a variety of plays; Steel Magnolias,Les Belles Soeurs, On Golden Pond, Second Time Around and Amigos Blue Guitar. Even winning a prize for best supporting actress at a drama festival.
Lorna is probably best known for her involvement in Anne Young's Antics Theatre where she had many roles. She always helped behind the scenes with the highly successful "Fawlty Towers" productions and often did a reading/monologue at every one of these great dinner theaters.
Lorna had an uncanny sense about things, she could look at a rock and decide it could be a frog, then paint it appropriately. She helped many rocks become a frog. With her dear friend Marg, they had great fun placing these frogs at various establishments in unobtrusive locations. We understand that some of them have traveled afar. You may even be one of the lucky ones who have acquired a "Gilda Frog" and now know why it was special.
She always had a positive outlook on life. Friends have described her as a special lady and she was. People she met were made to feel special too.
What a life, so well lived. She will be missed.
Lorna is predeceased by her parents, her husband Russ, her two brothers Clifford and Earling Carlson and her sister inlaw Marjorie Carlson.
