It is with heavy hearts the family of Leslie Charles "Les" Hoover announce his sudden passing at Campbell River, February 9th, 2021 at the age of 84.
Les was predeceased by Betty, his loving wife of 65 years. He is survived by their children Sandra (Warren) Gionet, Murray (Shannon) Hoover, Lyle Hoover, and Lynn Bauer, as well as their many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Les was a long-time Campbell River resident having moved there at a young age. He left school at an early age to work in the logging industry. He enjoyed physical labor and being a quick study rose quickly to the position of Hooktender and High Rigger, rigging wooden spar trees in high lead logging operations. He was very proud of accomplishing this at a very young age.
He met Betty asking her to accompany him to the "Van Isle" on their first date. They married young and remained in the area raising their family.
Les was an adventurous soul who performed pretty much every job the logging industry could offer. He also tried his hand at owning and operating a horse trail riding operation, commercial salmon fishing in his 42 foot west coast trawler, the "Lament", and owner operator of LCH Grading.
He was a voracious reader who had no issue with tackling something new simply by reading how to. Over the years he could be seen rebuilding a Cat diesel engine, braiding intricate western bosal horse bridles, as well as building and flying remote controlled airplanes. All of these were self taught.
Les' greatest passions were tying trout flies and fly fishing. He was absolutely masterful at tying known trout fly patterns and developed many successful patterns of his own. If one was to start talking fly tying with him, they'd best pull up a stool. They were going to be there awhile.
He also loved dogs and enjoyed daily walks in the areas many trails with "Buddy", his beloved Jack Russell terrier.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date when, at his request, his ashes will be spread with Betty's at her family cairn at Ford's Cove, Hornby Island.
