Of Campbell River, formerly of Thunder Bay, passed away on January 27, 2003 in the Campbell River Hospital at the age of 83 after a long courageous battle with cancer.


She was predeceased by her parents, Edgar and Aureila Spencer, brothers Ronald, Clifford, Sidney, sister Rilla and her husband William.


She is survived by her son Richard (Mavis) Wilkes of Thunder Bay, daughter Bonnie-Lee (Bill) Scott of Campbell River; grandchildren Michael (Tanya) Wilkes and Maureen (Wade) Hughes; great-granddaughters Heather, Amy and Alexa; brother Lloyd (Margaret) Spencer of Thunder Bay and many relatives in Ontario.


Leona was born in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay). She retired from Eaton’s with over 25 years of service. Upon retirement, she enjoyed volunteer work at the hospital where she made many good friends. Flower gardens and cats were her and her husbands loves.


In 1998, she took on a whole new adventure when she packed up her home, two cats and moved to be with her daughter and son-in-law in Campbell River. She was an active participant in the Campbell River seniors community. She also enjoyed the many activities of the Happy Wanderers group, and the crib club as well as aquatics at the local pool.


Special Thank you to Dr. Paul Brown, continuing care nurses, the nurses of 3rd North and the nurses of the Cancer care unit for all their understanding and loving care. Remember Leona for her smiling face and sense of humour.


There will be a Celebration of Leona’s Life at the Campbell River Legion Hall, Branch 137 at 1:00 pm, Sunday, February 2, 2003, refreshments to follow. Arrangements entrusted to ISLAND FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 103-909 ISLAND HIGHWAY. There will also be a Celebration of Life in Thunder Bay in the Spring of 2003.


Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Campbell River Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care Services.
