October 3, 1941 - January 27, 2022
Karen Salminen of Campbell River passed away at the Campbell River Hospital on January 27, 2022 following a brief illness. She was born in Nelson. B.C. on October 3 1941 but moved to Vancouver at an early age with her family. She remained and worked in the Lower Mainland until she her met husband Sal and they then moved to Campbell River in January 1988. It was a courageous move for her being unfamiliar with her husbands RCMP work demands and a new community of strangers.
Nevertheless she embraced her new role with energy and enthusiasm quickly making new friends and resuming her previous work experience with several local firms. She took up curling and was an active member of the Campbell River Curling club. She was a devoted golfer being one of the early members of the Storey Golf Club and assuming numerous roles in their Ladies Club. She had the distinction of scoring two holes in one on a very challenging golf course. Karen lost only son Michael at an early age while still living in Vancouver. She was followed to Campbell River by her daughter Wendy and grandson Michael. Unfortunately she was predecease by her daughter in June 2013. Surviving are her husband Sal of Campbell River, grandson Michael Schmidt (Candace) of Victoria and brother Wayne Smiley (Louise) of Courtenay. At her request there will no service held. Heartfelt thanks need to be extended to her C.A.R.E. team at the hospital and her doctor, Dr. Chad Malloff. Their professionalism and compassion truly need to be recognized.
