Irene Anna (Andrews) McMann

April 7, 1925 – December 7, 2011

Irene took the last step away from this world on Wednesday, December, 7th. She was born in Powell River and lived her early life there and in Great Central Lake. At five she moved to Courtenay and spent her youth there. In 1952 she married Glen McMann and moved to ERT, Camp 8 where they lived as a family with children Joyce, Ellen and Michael until they moved to Campbell River in 1968.

Irene’s roots were deep in the west coast, as her grandparents, Anna and Alfred Joyce, had settled on the southern tip of Quadra in the late 1800s. She never tired of sitting at her kitchen table gazing out at the water and Quadra.

She was a strong, quirky, proud woman who always had the coffee on for friends and family popping by. She was the matriarch of a family of children and grandchildren and the weakening of that role was mourned as she moved into Yucalta Lodge in December 2002. Her body was strong, but her mind weakened.

She leaves behind dear friends and family; Joyce (Jeremy) Ellen, Michael (Linda) and grandchildren Lauren, Timothy, Ryan and Emily.

Sincere thanks to the staff of Yucalta, Homestead South, who always expressed an enjoyment of who she was even as that diminished. Thank you to Dr. Mc Fadden for her care.

A small memorial tea will be held at Yucalta on Sunday, December 18th at 2 pm. Everyone is welcome. Please, no flowers.
