We are sorry to announce that Hugo Mattson passed peacefully away on Monday, May 5, 2003 in Calgary at the age of 95. Hugo was born April 24, 1908 in Lulea, Sweden. He immigrated to Canada when he was 20 years old, joining his older brother and sister, Runo and Esther. The family was united when younger brother Thure and mother Rosa immigrated in 1929. The family began their new life homesteading in the remote Toba Valley area near Desolation Sound B.C. where he lived off the land hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening. Hugo worked as a commercial fisherman, a logger, a faller and a boom man during his 50 year career. In 1992 he moved from Campbell River to live with his family in Calgary. He always made the best of a new experience and enjoyed his new life in Alberta. He continued to garden into his early 90s. Hugo loved the presence of his family, a good cup of coffee, playing cribbage and cheering on his favourite hockey team (the Canucks) and the odd trip to Vegas to play the “slotta” machines. Hugo was predeceased by his wife Dot in 1979. If friends wish, they may make a donation in Hugo’s memory to the SPCA, Box 541, Campbell River, V9W 5T9. He will be missed always and held deep in the hearts of his daughters Evy Werner and Elaine Sampson, sons-in-law Mel Werner and Tom Sampson, grandchildren Jodi Zebedee, Kara Werner, Chad, Paige and Meg Sampson, and great grandchild Tristan Zebedee. Later in life, Hugo often talked of his interest in going to see what was on the other side. Hugo had a wonderful sense of humour and many thought-provoking sayings. As he is now with his family that predeceased him, he is probably saying, “If I vasn’t home, I vould go home!” His soul is soaring free with the seagulls, high above the choppy whitecaps on the Strait of Georgia.
