Helen Patricia Schmidt
Our beloved wife, mom and Granny Helen passed away peacefully on a sunny day in Spring.
Helen Patricia Schmidt was born July 1, 1934 to parents John and Jean Strachan in Cumberland, BC. Helen’s childhood was spent joyfully with her ever-dear sister Bar-Jean.
Helen met her life’s true love, Isedor Schmidt, and they married in 1955. Together they had six children Debra, Rick (Brenda), Donna (Gordy), Kathy (Blake), Susan (Greg), and Larry (Kristel). The Schmidt family lived in Fanny Bay for many years, then in Victoria for six years and finally settled in Campbell River for over forty years.
Above all Helen lived her life for her pride and joy: her children and grand-children (Katie, Chelsea, Travis, Ben, Cameron, Steven, Brianna, Matt, Roy and Avery). Second came her dedication as a devoted wife. Helen and Isedor spent 21 winters holidaying in Palm Springs. Helen’s only complaint was always that she would like more than one day’s notice to get ready to leave!
Helen’s generous nature came through in her favourite past-times: knitting, baking and doing cross-word puzzles. She will forever be remembered in our hearts as the most unselfish, kind, compassionate and giving person. She had a wonderful gift for making all she met feel special and loved. We all wear her lovingly knitted sweaters with honour.
Through her illness Helen showed tremendous courage; always approaching life with her great sense of humour. Isedor was a pillar of strength throughout and never once left her side. With “Team Granny” holding her hand, Helen passed serenely on April 22, 2010. We take comfort that she is reunited with her daughter Deb. We know she is now a guardian angel watching over us; as she was an angel in life.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 1 at the Christian Life Fellowship at 445 Merecroft Road in Campbell River. Please dress casually. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
Team Granny would like to thank Dr. Phipps, the home-care nurses: Heather, Janine, Barb and the palliative care team for their care and compassion.
