September 20, 1933 - May 8, 2023
In loving memory ~
It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Patrick Sinnott. Gerald was born in Victoria, BC on September 20th, 1933; he passed away on May 8th, 2023, in Campbell River, BC. Predeceased by his wife, Cynthia Anne Sinnott (Ball), of 61 years (2020). He is survived by his three daughters: Susan Leanne Sinnott, Patricia Lynn Sinnott, and Katherine Louise Preston (Dale), grandchildren: Rachel, James, Kyla (Joel), Liam, Owen, and Anna, and his sister, Sheila Sinnott.
The son of George Park Sinnott and Peggy Sinnott (Harmer), he grew up in Victoria and shared many fond memories of his childhood. He spent a lot of time with his maternal grandmother who he adoringly called Nanny and he shared stories about being with his dad who was stationed at Work Point Barracks in Esquimalt and his mom who enjoyed renovating houses. He also spoke about playing baseball with his friends and golfing at the Gorge Vale Golf Course.
In 1951, Gerald graduated from Esquimalt High School, and, at 17 years of age, he enlisted in the Canadian Forces Army (Militia), Artillery Corps, 5th Independent Medium Battery RCA Unit. In January 1952, he was stationed at Work Point Barracks and graduated in 1952 and became 2nd Lieutenant of Royal Canadian Artillery. He served until July 1963 and attained the rank of Captain.
In 1952, Gerald joined Victoria College where he met the love of his life, Cynthia, and they married December 30th, 1958. In 1960, Gerald graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia in which he received several academic awards. Upon graduation, he was offered a free scholarship to Yale to get his Master of Laws to become a law professor. Gerald and Cynthia settled in Campbell River and he became partner in the law firm Sarich, Smith, & Sinnott. He practiced law in Campbell River until 2014, and when he retired, he was a lawyer for over 50 years and served thousands of people in the community.
Most of all, Gerald was a loving and generous grandfather, father, and husband who had such a jovial laugh and zest for life that could be seen with the glimmer he had in his eyes. He had a great commitment to his family and will be remembered for the most amazing Christmas celebrations, Saturday morning pancakes, weekend family drives, his love of gardening, great dinners, fun holidays to Nevada and California, and fireworks every Hallowe'en. Travelling with his wife, Cynthia, was very special to him in his later years.
We love you and miss you so very much. We are very blessed to have a life with you in it. Your love endures and lives on in all who knew and loved you.
A celebration of Gerald's life will be at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Campbell River, on Thursday, August 31st, at 2 pm.
