March 24, 1946 – June 4, 2016

70 years

He did not go Gentle into that Good Night.

Our beautiful man has gone. Gerry was born in Powell River to Reg and Florence Young (Harrison). He is predeceased by his parents and Step-father Orald Harrison.

Gerry is predeceased and by his son Christopher and survived by his wife Pat, daughter Victoria, son-in-law Steve Simons, grandchildren Shelby and Christian, all of Victoria B.C., his brother Barry and wife Lyn of Parksville, nieces Jacquie and Kelly and their families. Also many cousins throughout the world.

In 1969 Gerry graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree. He began work with Crown Zellerbach as an Engineering Assistant in Sandspit, Queen Charlotte Islands and retired from Timberwest as Vice President of Operations in 2007.

Gerry loved his work, especially his years in “the woods”. He loved the people with whom he worked. He enjoyed his golf – he was a Founding Member of Crown Isle Golf Club – and he and Pat spent many years golfing around North America. He had a passion for reading – he could tell you everything you needed (not necessarily wanted) to know about Winston Churchill, much to the chagrin of his golfing partners.

His ability to read in his retirement was cut short however as he became victim to dementia, Lewy Bodies and Vascular along with seizures.

Gerry entered care January 2, 2013. He died at Glacier View Lodge, Special Care Unit June 4, 2016. Special thanks must go to Dr. Doug Anderson, his wonderful friends Paul Berg and Steve Lackey and the Special Care Unit at Glacier View Lodge.

If you care to remember Gerry, donations to Glacier View Lodge, Special Care Unit, Heart and Stroke of BC, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation or Alzheimer’s Society of BC would be greatly appreciated.

A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held on Monday, June 13th, 2016 at 1:00pm from Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre on 1101 Ryan Rd., Courtenay with a reception to follow in the “Garden Room and Outdoor Patio” of the funeral home.
