Garnet Charles COULTER

November 5, 2010

COULTER, Garnet Charles

August 30, 1924 – November 5, 2010

As he wished, after a full and active life, Garnet passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of November 5, 2010 in Qualicum Beach, BC. He was predeceased by his wife Violet (2009) and is survived by daughters Joan (Jim) Munro of Campbell River and Sharon (John) Ahokas of Lantzville; grandchildren Debra (Ken) Olsen of Ft. McMurray, Todd (Jackie) Munro of Campbell River, Paula (Mike) Avender of Campbell River, Graeme (Stephanie) Ahokas of Calgary, Jason (Amanda) Ahokas of Nanaimo and Katherine (Robbie) Ahokas of Victoria; eight great-grandsons Nathan, Andrew, Tanar, Hunter, Daniel, Caleb, Cohen and Luca; one sister and many nieces and nephews. Garnet was born in Boskung, ON and was one of six children. Possessing an adventurous spirit he had many occupations during his lifetime. He began as a dinner chef at a summer hotel; owned his own bakeshop and worked at electrical contracting in Ontario. In 1951 he ventured west to British Columbia ending up in Campbell River where his first job was planting trees. In the spring of 1952 his family joined him. He worked at Argonaut Mine, Elk Falls Mill and then he began market gardening, raising beef cattle and egg production. In 1984 he purchased crown land on Hwy 28 where he built a log home for Vi and himself and developed a 50 site campground which they operated until 1998. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting and gardening – the flowers he grew in pots on his sundeck were the envy of his neighbours. His grandchildren and great-grandsons gave him great pleasure and he was very proud of them. A celebration of Garnet’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers those wishing to do so may make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of BC, 300 – 828 West 8th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E2 or a charity of their choice.
