Eleanor G. Jones

June 13, 1928 to Nov. 26, 2010

Eleanor (Ellie) Jones, 82, passed away peacefully at home after a short illness. She was predeceased by Stu, her husband of 54 years, who passed away in 2004; her parents, Leonard and Helen (Pitt) Grant; and her brother, John Grant.

Ellie was born and raised in San Francisco where she married Stu, her high school sweetheart, in 1950. She graduated from San Francisco State College with a B.A. in Art History and Elementary Education. In 1967, she and Stu, along with their four children, moved to Canada – first to Powell River and then to Campbell River the following year.

Ellie was one of the first kindergarten teachers in Campbell River and taught for 15 years, first at Elm and then Central School where she taught for more than 10 years. One of her greatest pleasures was when her former students, now grown and many with children of their own, would recognize her and give her a big smile and hug.

Since retiring in 1986, Ellie and Stu spent the winters in Apache Junction, Arizona, and the summers in Campbell River. Since Stu passed away, Ellie has divided her time between her garden, which she loved, playing bridge, and keeping up with U.S. politics. She was a staunch Democrat and Obama supporter.

Ellie will be missed by her daughter Laurie (Ron) of Vancouver and Campbell River, son Jeff (Marianne) of Sointula, daughter Jennie of Nanaimo, and son Brian (Maureen) of Squamish, and eight grandchildren – Josiah, Caley, Kyle, Jan, Tristan, Jesse, Scotia and Holden.

The family would like to thank the Home Care Nurses, Barbara and Marlene and their team, and the team of Home Support Workers who provided so much help and support to Mom during her last few weeks. She truly appreciated their care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. No service by Ellie’s request.
