Edith Mary Rose Smith passed away into the presence of her Lord peacefully on December 9, 2016 with family by her side. Predeceased by her husband Dick and youngest son Gary, Edith is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Harold) Hansen, sons Wayne (Lynn) Smith and Stan (Susan-deceased) Smith. Edith’s joy in life was serving her Lord and being with her 4 children and her 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Nana” as well as most of their friends. Edith’s parents had immigrated to Canada from England and she was the youngest and the last surviving of 6 children.

Mum was born October 5, 1920 in Fort Qu’Appelle, SA and grew up in Regina. She moved to BC in 1940 meeting the love of her life Stanley Richard (Dick) Smith. They were married in 1941. After the birth of their first child Dad, serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, was shipped overseas to serve during WWII. Returning two years later they continued building their family. The lived in Victoria then moved to North Vancouver. After Dad’s passing, Mum moved to Burnaby where she lived for thirty years. She had many beloved friends and church family at Calvary Baptist Church in Burnaby. She moved to Campbell River in 2005 to be near her family.

Mum saw almost a century of innovation, technology and change. She survived breast cancer at age 64 and a heart attack at 92. She was very social, attending CR Baptist Church Young At Heart, and all the concerts and productions of her great grandchildren. She loved her family and they adored her.

She was a woman of intestinal fortitude. Her husband was a double amputee, her first home had wooden floors and she had an ice box. She did laundry by hand and made bread the old fashioned way…by hand. She loved Christmas and every year would bake until she dropped. She made the best Christmas pudding ever. She loved going to church, being with her family and going out for a meal.

She has fought the good fight, she has run the race…and now she has won the prize….eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thank you to all the staff at CR Hospital who took such wonderful care of Mum.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday January 27, 2017 at Campbell River Baptist Church 260 S. Dogwood Street at 2 pm.
