In loving memory ~
It is with deep sadness to announce that Duane Root has passed away. Duane was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cared deeply for his family.
Duane was born in Unity, Saskatchewan to Donald and Mary Root. Along with his older sister, Patricia, the family moved out west in the early forties searching for opportunity and to build a new life in Vancouver. After high school Duane joined the Royal Bank and enjoyed a successful career that took him to communities around B.C.
As a young man he was posted in different locations as he worked his way through the ranks starting in Vancouver, then onwards to Youbou, Nanaimo, Burns Lake, back to Nanaimo, Vanderhoof, back to Vancouver, and finally to Campbell River in 1977. Each location brought many interesting experiences, professional opportunities, and, it turns out, the love of his life Dorothy (nee Luxton). It was in Burns Lake that Duane met Dorothy, a British school teacher, who had just moved from the UK. They began building their life together, which included having three children.
After retiring from the bank in 1990, Duane took on consulting work in Bella Bella where he and Dorothy enjoyed many trips to the community. Over this lifetime, Duane liked to travel and took many trips around B.C, Hawaii, the U.S, and Europe. He also introduced his love of skiing, which he began back in the 1950's on Grouse Mountain, to his kids taking them on many memorable holidays, along with summer camping trips. Duane had a wonderful sense of humour, an infectious laugh, and a twinkle in his eye. He was open and curious about people, and always made time for a chat.
Duane was pre-deceased by his wife, Dorothy, and leaves behind his children Derek (Heidi), Paul (Torang), Liz (Andrej) and grandchildren (Cameron, Erika, Nick, Rebecca, Max, Luca, and Sadie) to remember the loving father and grandfather that he was. He also leaves behind his sister Patricia (Erwen) and his nephews and niece (Kevin, Tyler, Renee, and Griffin). He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Suzy Georgeson for her kindness and support to Duane over the past several years as his health declined. Thanks also to the nurses at North Island Hospital, Campbell River (floor 3B) for the wonderful care they provided and, finally, the family would like to express appreciation to the staff at the Discovery Harbour Care Home who kindly cared and supported Duane over the past year and a half.
A celebration of life will be held in 2022.
