Doris May Wallace (nee Frobel)

With sad hearts, we share the passing of Doris, mother, granny & great granny. She passed away peacefully at The Views, Long Term Care home in Comox on December 26th, 2022.
Born Doris May Frobel, on her parent's farm in Ellice Township Perth County, Stratford Ontario in 1924. Predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John (Jack) Wallace & both her sisters Helen Straubel, Pearl Harper. Survived by Kay
(Stan) Uzzell, Guy (Valerie) Wallace, Kim (Paul) Suurhoff, and Her grandchildren Cherylee (Brian) Lee, Karen (Chad) Doolittle, Lorraine, Tanner (Marlee), Jeffrey (Teresa), Stephanie, Kristina (Lee), Brendan (Jessica), Derek (Rebecca), Lee (Jennifer) and great- grandchildren Garrett, Stewart, Jackson, Payton, Amelia, Avery, Ryen, Corey, Jack, Oliver, Jude, Evan, Madelyn and Reese.
At 18 years old Mom worked at many jobs that included being a live-in maid for a wealthy family & JM Schneiders meat packing. In September of 1947 mom and her cousin, Olive made a plan to travel to Alaska and Yukon. With $100 in their pocket and the train ticket costing $67, they headed out, working along the way at places like Kelowna Fruit cannery, Cloverleaf fish cannery & Swifts meat packing. In January of 1948, they made it to Duncan and found a job as a Waitress. She was accepted for passage on the Princess Louise to Skagway Alaska and from there the narrow gage White pass steam Locomotive to Whitehorse. Worked again as a chambermaid in a local motel until her bus pass money was saved to head back to Duncan.
She also met the man of her life in Duncan, introduced by a friend as a gent in the hospital awaiting knee surgery. Dad proposed and by December 22nd, 1948, they were back in Ontario and were married. They moved back to the Island and settled in 1957 in Campbell River. Built their home, and were here ever since. Together they travelled as much as they could and joined mixed league curling, card games, camping, fishing and hunting.
Our mom was a very strong woman who always had her Lutheren faith to guide her way. She worked hard throughout her life to make a home for us and tend an enormous garden to feed us. Mom volunteered for organizations and canvased for Heart & Stroke and the cancer foundation for so many years. She was the go-to person to hitch a ride with to church, cards, appointments, and more. Even though she was older than most of the people she would pick up. She gave up her licence at the age of 93, but up until that point she was still very active in the Community with all those things plus visiting those who were already in a home or hospital. Mom was the first one to introduce herself and make friends. Wherever she travelled she would always look up our last name in a "phone book" and call to see if we may be related. She made a lot of friends that way.
Services will be held Saturday, January 7th at 11:00 a.m. Lutheran Church, Campbell River.
