December 5, 1937 - December 26, 2021
Don passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, with his family by his side, after persevering through many years of difficult health issues.
Don was born in Calgary December 5, 1937, to parents Elwood & Roma (Thomson) Hunter.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Donna; daughters Dee (Ian), Megan & Rachael and Dawn (Al), Mattie & Derek; brother Doug & family; nieces Terri and Joy & families; nephew Keith; long-time friend Dave Proctor & family; the Thomson family cousins; Bill Davis; and his many close friends. Predeceased by sister Nina.
Don moved to Vernon at age 18 and apprenticed as a mechanic at Bloom & Siglet. In 1960, Don came to Campbell River for a visit; here, in 1961, he met his future wife Donna and never left! Don worked as a mechanic in Campbell River for the next ten years, before opening his own mechanic business, Truck Town.
Don later became a truck driver for several companies; he particularly enjoyed his ten years driving for Haida Freight. Don was a volunteer fireman in Campbell River for 10 years, starting around 1964.
Don was also a long-time member of the North Island Vintage Car Club, where he developed many lifelong friendships. Don was very resourceful with a talent for mechanical and restoration work and loved sharing his vast knowledge. Don's proudest accomplishment was building, from scratch, Henrietta - his 1914 Ford Model T Towncar! (Don even built some of the tools needed for building this car!)
Over the years, Don enjoyed his time spent with family & friends: camping & fishing, lunches with the "lunch bunch", and celebrating many special occasions! Most of all, "Papa" treasured time spent with his grandchildren.
Don's guidance, wisdom, strength, & love for family & friends will always be cherished. Forever loved & missed, and always in our hearts.
