It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Deanne Wood of Campbell River, BC at the age of 94. She will be dearly missed by her children Gareth, Roma, and Mari (Robert), stepson John and family, grandson Evan, step-grandchildren Tiffany, Alysha and Natasha, cousins Pamela and Barbara in England, nieces, nephews, and friends. Deanne is predeceased by her husband John, sister Marie, and son-in-law Wayne.
Deanne was born to William and Alice Mink and raised in Doncaster, England. She met her husband-to-be John (then a photographer) and embarked on a successful career as a fashion model in Britain and France. They were married in Edinburgh and immigrated to BC in 1952, a year after Gareth was born. Roma was born a few years later in New Denver, and after finally settling in Victoria, Mari was born.
Deanne was an elegant wife and homemaker devoted to supporting John and raising her children. Aspiring to a home with a view, she encouraged several house moves including buying a seaside cabin in Sooke where she enjoyed beachcombing in search of driftwood and treasures.
Her love for the water eventually led them to an oceanfront home in Sidney where they spent many years cruising the Gulf Islands in their cabin cruiser. Deanne was always proud of the fact that she could dock the boat better than John.
Deanne enjoyed travelling to tropical destinations and back home to England but was also adventurous in spirit and toured the pyramids of Egypt with Roma and rafted down the Athabasca River. She was an accomplished pastel portrait artist, and enjoyed teaching yoga, choir singing, birdwatching and cruise travel.
In 2015, Deanne moved into Berwick by the Sea retirement living community in Campbell River where she enjoyed much companionship. She passed away in an ocean view room at the CR hospital. She will always be remembered by her children as the most non-judgemental, caring and forgiving mother. And no matter how she was feeling, she would always reply "I'm fine".
At Deanne's request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in Deanne's name can be made to the BC Cancer Agency.
