In the early morning of Feb. 16, 2017, Dan weighed anchor for a final voyage in uncharted waters. Passed away suddenly at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria from renal failure with his loving companion Joane and his family there for him.

Born in 1928 in Vancouver to Gordon and Marguerite Gibbons. At the young age of 13, Dan made his way to family at Jackson Bay to begin a long, hardworking successful career of making a living on the coast. In 1954, he married Dorothy in Port Neville where their first child, Michael, was born. Moved to Kelsey Bay in 1956 to haul logs. Being a self made man, he decided to purchase and operate his own logging trucks and continued a career of hauling big loads of timber.

He moved his family to Campbell River in 1962 and later decided to try his hand at commercial fishing. He purchased his first marine vessel, a trawler called, “The Sunrise”, on which many happy days were spent with son Michael. Throughout his fishing career, he also owned trawlers “Arctic II" and The Spanker.”

His sharp mind, sense of humour and knowledge made him a true friend and mentor to many people of all ages and a man we are so proud to call “Our Dad.”

Retired in Campbell River, he started most days with coffee club friends, fishing off the Hump with his good friend Ray, tending prawn and crab traps, gardening, working on projects and enjoying the passage view from his deck.

In 2010, he met Joane and moved to Victoria to embark on a new exciting life, full of love, travel, gardening, golf, exploring the city and enjoyed many more active years of laughs and good times. On planes, trains, automobiles, Dan and Joane fulfilled his lifetime dream trip to Newfoundland, Labrador and Nova Scotia where he researched his family’s ancestry in Halifax.

He leaves behind his, and our, dear Joane and her family.

His family; Jennifer and his good buddy/son-in-law Marc Charest, Sylvia Gibbons (Ian), son Philip Gibbons, grandchildren Neil, Steven and Clayton; great-grandchildren Nolan and Alice. Predeceased by son Michael and wife Dorothy Gibbons.

Survived by siblings Robert, Jean, Leonard, Alan, Ronald, Anne, Judy, Michael and Ruth. Predeceased by brothers William and Freddie.

A memorial will be held for Daniel at the Coast Discovery Inn, Quadra Room in Campbell River, BC on Sunday, March 12th

from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
