Bud was born and raised in Banff, Alberta before moving to Vancouver to pursue his education at UBC.  He graduated with his Bachelors of Applied Science in Forest Engineering, where he earned his Professional Engineer designation.  After graduating from university, he worked in various engineering positions, from assistant engineer to divisional engineer, project supervisor and general logging superintendent with British Columbia Forest Products before retiring from Fletcher Challenge Canada as Manager of the Mainland Coast Division in Campbell River.
