April 17, 2011

Albert Saunders

Former longtime resident of Campbell River, Bert Saunders, passed away in Nanaimo on April 17th. Just a month short of his 94th birthday, Bert died unexpectedly after a very short illness.

He worked for many years in the forest industry including driving cat for the Menzies Bay Division of MacMillan Bloedel.

One of the original cowboys in the Chilcotin, he also fought in the Great Fire on northern Vancouver Island when he was only seventeen.

A veteran of W.W.II, he served in the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Sicily and Italy. After the war, he brought home a war bride from England, his wife for 66 years.

He enjoyed camping and fishing, including many camp outs at Camp 5.

Bert is survived by his wife Dolly, in Nanaimo; daughters Gail Saunders and Carole Bruce (Doug); grandson Jason Bruce and great granddaughter Ayla, all of Campbell River; as well as grandsons Mike Wood and family of Victoria and Kevin Wood and family of Penticton. There are three remaining siblings as well.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date.
