ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION NOTICE

Application for a Permit Under The Provisions of the Environmental Management Act

We, Sunny Valley Fruit Ltd., intend to submit this application to the Director to authorize the discharge of effluent from a fruit storage facility and packing house. The sources of discharge are effluent from fruit washing prior to packing.

The land upon which the facility will be situated and the discharge will occur is Lot A District Lot 2821 Similkameen Division Yale District Plan KAP59330 located at 825 Keremeos Bypass Road in Keremeos, within the Similkameen Valley Airshed, Similkameen River watershed, in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.

The maximum rate of effluent discharged from this facility will be, at full capacity, 42.6 cubic metres per day. Three of the discharge locations will be for cherry processing lines, operating from June until August, with effluent discharged weekly. The total volume of cherry line discharge is 34.1 cubic metres. The fourth discharge location is for apples, operating from September until March, pending harvest volumes. Discharge from this line is anticipated to be every two days. The volume of effluent discharge from this discharge point is 8.5 cubic metres. The operating period for this facility will be 24 hours/day, 7 days/week during harvest season and is crop dependent. The characteristics of the effluent discharge is as follows: trace pesticides and fertilizers used by the growers prior to arrival at the packing house, a post-harvest fungicide and dilute sanitizing and disinfecting sodium hypochlorite solution. No treatment is proposed to be completed prior to release of the effluent discharge.

Any person who may be adversely affected by the proposed discharge of waste and wishes to provide relevant information may, within 30 days after the last date of posting, publishing, service or display, send written comments to the applicant, with a copy to the Director, Environmental Protection at envCIA@gov.bc.ca. The identity of any respondents and the contents of anything submitted in relation to this application will become part of the public record.
