The United Nations nominated March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
On that date in 1966 the General Assembly called on the international community to strengthen its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
The proclamation of this day was a direct result of the happenings of March 21, 1960. At a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws,” police openly fired on and killed 69 people in Sharpeville, South Africa.
For the past 16 years Campbell River has been uniting on the closest Saturday to this day to support individuals that experience racial discrimination.
This year on Saturday, you are invited to join hundreds of Campbell River residents on their walk away from racial discrimination, towards a more inclusive and fair community.
The event starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Centre on 11th Avenue.
It will be kicked off with a social gathering and live multicultural entertainment, as well as face painting and activities for the children.
At 11 a.m. the walk will begin with a short welcoming and introduction to the day, and at 11:20 a.m., participants will gather outside the Community Centre to commence the one-kilometre walk through the downtown core.
As participants return to the Community Centre they will be greeted by more live multicultural entertainment, an amazing performance by CR DanceXtreme, the opportunity to try Zumba and more. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be served by wonderful volunteers.
